Biotechnology

Biotechnology has been practiced since ancient times when our ancestors took advantage of microorganisms to make yeast and use fermentation to make wine. It is a science where students learn to combine the knowledge in biology and life sciences with current technology. Students will learn to modify genetics in animals, plants to create a new product.

So if you found biology, and chemistry subjects to your liking, there is a chance that you will enjoy the time well spent in this field. You will also dedicate lots of your time in lab researching and experimenting with living organisms and bacterias.

The products created can range from agricultural products (food preservatives, genetically engineered vegetables) to creating vitamins and vaccines for human immune system. The industry is set to blossom in the foreseeable future and graduates demand are most likely to be high.

Food Science

If chemistry, biology, and food ingredients processing make you drool, then food science might be the perfect major for you!

Food Scientists really pay attention to what they eat. After all, they are what they eat, right? Right.... They have extreme curiosity on how basic ingredients are processed into foods, packaged, and distributed to every household in the nation. Not only that, they also care about how these consumer goods are affecting people's health and diet habits. They will study the science in creating quality food, dairy products that last longer than the traditional ones. The upcoming trend is researching nutritional needs for people of various ages.

It is very recommended that food science students get hands-on training as much as they can, starting from the moment they get into the major. Internship opportunities are widely available and offered by school research department, private companies, to government aided research facility. Countless hours spent in the lab are to be expected, though you are also expected to be a good team-player.

Architecture

On the contrary of popular beliefs, you don't have to be a skilled artist to enter this major. Though it helps to have an artistic gift, architects will be expected to have a creative thinking process, work long hours in solitary while at the same time also able to communicate ideas to a team, and sketch his ideas on a piece of paper.

A good architect is a well rounded graduate who will learn to accentuate the building she builds by observing the surrounding environment. Students will be taught from history of architectural design, how a culture affects building designs, construction physics and materials. Lately, architects are adhered to professional practices to avoid illegal conducts in the profession.

Students will spend their university years in a studio constructing replicas of their blueprints. These assignments will train them to be able to work as a team and individually. There will also be on-site visits where students can observe existing buildings and draw inspirations from their mentors.

By having an undergraduate degree does not entitle students to join the professional association yet. Students will be expected to pursue a higher qualification (e.g.: Postgraduate, professional exams) in order to open a firm or practice his profession.

Agriculture

Humans have learned the agricultural science for as long we can remember. It is a basic necessity that simply can’t be ignored. The main problem has always been matching the supply of available products to feed the demand of masses.

Agriculture is a science to help eradicate world hunger, malnutrition and improve quality of our lives as a whole. With global warming affecting crops quality and the unpredictability of harvest time, students will be equipped with cutting edge technology to yield the desired result.

In a typical agriculture degree, you will be taught in various fields ranging from biology, chemistry, viruses, climate, and agribusiness. In terms of career, you will be prompted with 2 choices :

1. Working in a research company as a lab scientist, or

2. Steer towards the business side by managing and promoting the agricultural products / by-products.

If you are keen on learning about animals, plants, and how to make our earth green as it once was, then, agriculture is definitely for you!
